In 2Q21, Heavy Reading surveyed 86 communications service providers (CSPs) across global regions on their plans for customer premises equipment overall and universal CPE (uCPE) specifically. This report presents the highlights of that survey. Omdia’s uCPE Tracker – 1H21 Annual Forecast report projects that the worldwide uCPE hardware market will grow from $52.5m in 2020 to $2.3bn in 2025—an impressive CAGR of 113% over five years. With this in mind, Heavy Reading expected to see good support for uCPE from survey respondents, and we were not disappointed. We targeted the survey at CSPs planning to implement uCPE within, at most, 24 months. Nevertheless, the respondent pool showed a more lively than anticipated adoption of uCPE. 59% of US, 61% of Asia Pacific (APAC), and 39% of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) respondents have already deployed uCPE.

Wireless telecommunications technology has undergone a tremendous evolution in the last few decades, from making simple phone calls (1G) and sending text messages (2G), to connecting to highspeed internet (3G) and providing multimedia and entertainment services (4G). Futuristic technologies such as remote robotics and virtual reality are emerging quickly and are likely to see mass adoption, while 4G cellular networks have reached capacity limits and are incapable of supporting the uninterrupted operations of these services. It is estimated that data will reach 175 zettabytes worldwide by 2025, up from 1.2 zettabytes in 2010, when 4G was first being deployed globally. 5G therefore provides a much-needed mobile bandwidth infrastructure for a world of connected objects and smarter cities.

Many industries are looking at 5G as the backbone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It is a golden opportunity for communications service providers (CSPs) to create and capture new market spaces by driving innovation, efficiency, and growth across various industries. A key factor influencing the uptake of wireless solutions is the question of how to handle spectrum for industrial purposes, since reliable connectivity demands licensed spectrum. Some countries provide spectrum dedicated for industrial use, whereas others do not. The intention of this paper is not to discuss the pros and cons of such spectrum strategies, but rather to focus on industries with local radio coverage needs. It tries to show that whether licensed spectrum is set aside for industries or not, CSPs are in the prime position to optimally address these industrial connectivity needs with powerful 5G networks and business models focused on industries. For regulators intending to implement licensed spectrum dedicated to industrial use, this paper aims to describe how this should best be done using simple principles and the well-defined legislation already available in most countries across the world. Many industries are looking at 5G as the backbone of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. There is no end to the process of network augmentation, and current augmentation process needs to be further enhanced to better serve the future customer needs. To this effect, the networks should be flexible, agile and scalable. In addition, in the 5G era, creation of new vertical markets utilizing the mobile networks will be facilitated. Under these circumstances, operators need to keep evolving their networks by adding new network equipment and/or replacing existing equipment. With open interfaces and open application programming interfaces (APIs), operators can freely choose and adopt best-of-breed solutions among various vendors considering time-to-market and cost in this process by only adding or replacing the required components at the required time without having to swap other equipment that are connected.

At the end of 2019, Heavy Reading surveyed 77 communications service providers (CSPs) on their plans for virtualization overall, and virtualized radio access networks (vRANs) specifically. A lot has happened since then that could throw the carriers off course – like data centers and central offices going zero-touch and lights-out virtually overnight. Heavy Reading checked in with the carriers in Q2 2021 to see how their plans have changed. This report highlights the results of our 2021 survey, comparing and contrasting them with the results from our 2019 survey.
