For service providers SD-WAN is a mixed blessing

SD-WAN has been coming down the technology pipeline for a while now. Since the wide-area aspect of Software Defined Networks (SDNs) came to prominence perhaps five years back, service providers have been trying to work out how, and when, it will land in their market. We know this because, as a business specialising in giving service providers visibility of what’s going on in their networks, we wanted those answers too. Surprise! SD-WAN is refusing to fit neatly into the provider’s traditional way of doing business.

Did 5G cause coronavirus? Four reasons why ‘dangerous’ conspiracy theory is completely wrong

Article | May 18, 2023

5G is a little higher at 3.4GHz to 3.6GHz, but that's tiny when you consider that microwaves go up to 300GHz. And visible light comes in at a range of around 430THz to 770THz. That's more than a thousand times higher than the maximum microwave – and 100,000 higher than 5G. Dangerous radiation, like UV rays, X-rays and gamma rays are also far higher up the spectrum still. Early theories suggested 5G could lead to cancer – and now crackpots have linked it to coronavirus too. But it's simply impossible for 5G to cause any of these problems. Radiation damages cells by breaking them apart, but 5G microwaves simply lack the power to do this. 5G is a low-frequency radiation, far below infrared and visible light. In fact, it's essential that 5G is low-frequency, because higher frequencies are less useful at delivering mobile signals over large areas. We know that this level of radiation is safe, because otherwise the visible light from our televisions would have killed us a long time ago.

Meet Delta Sharing: Access more data with secure, open source data sharing

Article | September 28, 2023

If we’ve learned anything in the past year, it’s how much our progress hinges on the ability to share and collaborate around data.During the pandemic, we watched as scientists from around the world raced to develop COVID-19 vaccines in record time. A process that typically takes 10 to 15 years took less than a year—due in part to global collaboration and data sharing. As we transition to the post-COVID-19 era, the “need for speed has never been greater,” says McKinsey. The organizations that will thrive in this new economy will facilitate collaboration, empower individuals and teams, and build impactful partnerships. That success requires shifting from the traditional “don’t share data unless” mindset to a data-sharing mindset grounded in a solid foundation of technology, data-driven culture, and processes.

5G Standalone: What's So Exciting About It?

Article | May 20, 2021

The much-anticipated 5G Standalone has arrived. T-Mobile is the first to launch it in the USA, covering 250 million people across 7,500 cities and towns, including rural areas. China Mobile is the only other service provider to launch it in Hong Kong. Overall, 58 operators are currently investing (November 2020) in 5G SA, including those who have launched. 5G SA makes a break from 5G non-standalone by integrating the evolved packet core or the signaling brain of the 5G network, which controls the network's devices. It prepares the groundwork for new services unique to this generation of networks, such as network slicing to customize enterprise services across multiple networks.

Google bans 5G coronavirus conspiracy theory ads

Techradar | April 08, 2020

Google has announced a crackdown on adverts around misguided conspiracy theories concerning a link between coronavirus and 5G networks. The search giant has said it will be banning advertising on search terms and keywords that relate to “misleading health claims” surrounding 5G and coronavirus. The news follows a number of attacks by conspiracy theorists on 5G masts across the UK, despite repeated advice from scientists that there is no link between the global pandemic and the high-speed networks. This looks to prevents companies and individuals from profiteering from public health emergencies by blocking their adverts from appearing in search results. Earlier this week, scientists, the UK government and the country's mobile industry joined together to plead for the spread of misinformation to stop. As well as attacks on masts, telecoms and networking infrastructure workers have also faced abuse and assault.
