This paper presents a retrospective of network function virtualization (NFV), highlighting the context and the main use cases that made NFV a promised land in telecom. NFV is still waiting to be widely adopted by network operators, who do not see the return on investment that justifies procuring the technology and fail to see solutions to the challenges highlighted herein.

5G HAS FINALLY BECOME AVAIL ABLE. COMPARED TO 4G, 5G CAN DECREASE latency tenfold, increase throughput tenfold, and boost trac capacity by 100 times. More important than 5G technology itself for telecom carriers and service providers, however, are the wealth of capabilities enabled by 5G.

The modern distributed workplace—including enterprises with thousands of branches and remote workers—requires updated approaches to cloud, networking, and security infrastructure. Cloud migration has opened the door to a huge increase in sophisticated applications, requiring networks that can carry traffic to an increasingly remote workforce. In turn, this creates a unique set of new requirements for security, including special capabilities to handle unpredictable locations of users, applications, and traffic flows.

Currently, traditional RAN vendors are delivering to operators a ready for deployment RAN solution, which is already fully tested and pre-integrated in their own facilities. Each vendor manages its own lab and testing resources, so that the associated overhead in integration complexity is transparent to the operator. Hardware and software are tied, and product roadmap is built according to 3GPP specifications for radio functionalities. Logical interfaces between subsystems of the radio site are proprietary defined, so no interoperability between different vendors is possible.

Fast and reliable communications services are perhaps the defining trait of today’s world. Enterprises, mobile operators and other entities requiring high-speed connectivity should be able to enter an address to see serviceability options, determine orderable network service products and pricing, place the order, and then receive proactive notifications regarding the status of their order.
