Operator Requirements for 5G Core Connectivity Options

May 11, 2019

For the introduction of 5G, 3GPP has specified 5 possible configurations or ‘Options’ for connecting to an EPC or new 5G core network (6 if the current 4G system is included). re-use of existing EPC Core functionality. Option 3 has been fully specified in an early drop of 3GPP Release 15. The other deployment Options already fully specified by 3GPP are Option 2 and Option 5, both standalone options differing in the type of radio access technology connected to the new mobile core network 5GC. These options were completed in June 2018 (ASN.1 in September 2018).

Access-to-Core Optical Transport Network Switching

whitePaper | June 21, 2021

Layer 1 transport services are a highly profitable offering that service providers can sell to enterprises. These services, which include ethernet, fiber channel, and legacy SDH/SONET, provide connection to data centers and other corporate locations. However, it has always been a challenge to provision these services fast enough, due to the rigid, low-cost nature of optical access networks. This paper highlights how an innovative and economical access-to-core Optical Transport Networking (OTN) switching solution can enable service providers to provision these lucrative services rapidly, speeding up time to revenues, maintaining customer satisfaction, while also guaranteeing service availability.

Making 5G A Reality

whitePaper | December 12, 2019

Qualcomm said it expects 200 million 5G smartphones to be sold in 2020 and that will make it the world’s largest supplier of mobile phone chips. Qualcomm Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala said on an investor call there would be “two inflexion points” for 5G chips next year. One would be in the spring when firms like Samsung and several Chinese handset makers tend to introduce new phones. “The second point will be in the Autumn when another set of flagship devices will adopt 5G.” Fall is when Apple and Alphabet launch new models. Qualcomm’s 5G market estimate, disclosed during a fourth quarter earnings report, is the first from the company
