Delivering Security Virtually Everywher with SDN and NFV

Without a doubt, SDN and NFV are among the most-discussed and frequently confused topics in all of networking. Though SDN and NFV have applicability beyond security, their implementation has serious impact on security architecture, and will enable a new generation of security services. From its academic beginnings at Stanford University in 2005 to practical applications in data centers and telecommunications carrier networks during the past 4 years, SDNs (software defined networks) show the potential to solve significant operational problems. The Open Networking Foundation (ONF) is the group dedicated to defining and promoting SDN technology, and they define SDN as “an emerging network architecture where network control is decoupled from forwarding and is directly programmable. This migration of control, formerly tightly bound in individual network devices, into accessible computing devices enables the underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services, which can treat the network as a logical or virtual entity.” This sounds simple enough, and security is certainly one of the “services” that can be paired with logical or virtual network infrastructure.

The Journey to Virtualized RAN: Insights 2021

whitePaper | July 9, 2021

At the end of 2019, Heavy Reading surveyed 77 communications service providers (CSPs) on their plans for virtualization overall, and virtualized radio access networks (vRANs) specifically. A lot has happened since then that could throw the carriers off course – like data centers and central offices going zero-touch and lights-out virtually overnight. Heavy Reading checked in with the carriers in Q2 2021 to see how their plans have changed. This report highlights the results of our 2021 survey, comparing and contrasting them with the results from our 2019 survey.

Next Generation Mission Critical Networks

whitePaper | May 24, 2023

In a society moving towards digital, where access to data in almost real time is key to every single industry sector, Public Safety (PS) services are seen as laggers when it comes to take most of the technology available to enable agencies and emergency services to benefit the best information available. By relying in voicecentric technologies, Public Safety services cannot support themselves for instance on simple video-based use cases, which would leverage decision making processes with insightful information that could for example make a difference between life and death.

Tackling Indoor 5G Coverage

whitePaper | March 15, 2022

Operators are picking up serious momentum when it comes to 5G roll outs. As of December 2021, 487 operators in 145 countries or territories had invested in 5G mobile or fixed wireless networks with 200 of these having launched some level of 5G network coverage. However, there is still a long road ahead when it comes to ensuring that 5G meets its potential and drives maximum ROI. A big stumbling block to overcome will be to ensure comprehensive coverage, in particular, in buildings.

Lavelle Networks SD-WAN Improves Branch Office Cloud Access

whitePaper | January 5, 2020

The popularity of cloud services has meant big changes for branch office networks, which have been operating for years utilizing only dedicated multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) connections back to a corporate data centers. Now, there’s a need to add broadband connections for faster cloud access. But these links are less secure and complicate network management and policy enforcement. Software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) systems enable branch offices to have both their broadband connections and to enforce policies designed to improve network security and performance.
