ince its launch in the mid-1990s, SONET has been an extremely successful technology, with millions of nodes deployed and billions of dollars made from the incredibly diverse set of applications it has supported. This paper explains the technology evolution of SONET and lays out the case for why service providers should consider migrating their legacy networks to IP-based transport.

5G networks will be available soon, and it’s time to prepare your network to take advantage of this high-speed, lowlatency technology. 5G wireless technology will represent an even greater leap forward in network performance, enabling enterprises to tap into a broad range of new applications and services.

The third wave of the Internet is marked by substantial growth of more mobile, powerful, intelligent, and automated devices on the emerging edge network. In this environment, IT and OT will be converged and contribute to the increasing volume of data creation. This growth will outpace the growth of the core infrastructure capacity and create congestion points in the end-to-end application delivery chain, causing massive latency. Delay will bring near fatal blows to system stability and the application experience. Security challenges will also increase significantly. These conditions require a new approach—one centered around holistic application distribution and based on a different set of technology design principles. This is the essence of the Edge 2.0 era.

One of the overarching goals of the ETSI Industry Specification Group (ISG) F5G on Fifth Generation Fixed Network is to establish a regular rhythm of evolution for the fixed telecommunications network. This technology enhancement corresponds to the series of generations defined for the wireless network. So far, F5G has published technical specifications on use cases, generations definition of fibre networks, architecture, and more. As it continues, these documents will be enhanced and revised to describe the fifth generation of fixed networks more fully. Therefore, we need to consider the evolution of F5G. This White Paper describes the drivers, dimensions, and technologies of the F5G advanced and beyond.
