Migrating Fixed Access to 5G Core

October 25, 2019

The advent of 5G is seen by many operators as a once in a generation opportunity to converge their networks. Their motives for convergence are varied but include This is in addition to the new service capabilities enabled by the 5G Core (5GC). This is also discussed further in MD-427 (ref. 1). However, the required network transformation is significant, demands substantial investment and needs to be performed “in service”. Broadband Forum has been working in cooperation with 3GPP to define how fixed access to the 5G core will operate. The key concerns raised by operators and embodied in the work is that.

Achieving IP/Optical Convergence: Building from Existing Networks

whitePaper | July 8, 2021

Enterprise and residential market dynamics, 5G, and the cloud are driving new applications—and creating new revenue opportunities for Communications Service Providers (CSPs). But these emerging use cases are also creating challenges: new traffic patterns, the move to virtualized and distributed applications, and the need for higher bandwidth and lower latency connectivity to end-users. IP/Optical convergence can play a key role in helping CSPs address these, but where does the path to architecture evolution begin? For every CSP, the journey is unique. With Ciena’s solutions, CSPs can start—and build—from their existing networks to evolve to a more streamlined, programmatic infrastructure that can serve as the foundation for innovation in the distributed services and content era.

Access-to-Core Optical Transport Network Switching

whitePaper | June 21, 2021

Layer 1 transport services are a highly profitable offering that service providers can sell to enterprises. These services, which include ethernet, fiber channel, and legacy SDH/SONET, provide connection to data centers and other corporate locations. However, it has always been a challenge to provision these services fast enough, due to the rigid, low-cost nature of optical access networks. This paper highlights how an innovative and economical access-to-core Optical Transport Networking (OTN) switching solution can enable service providers to provision these lucrative services rapidly, speeding up time to revenues, maintaining customer satisfaction, while also guaranteeing service availability.

WAN-as-a-Service Enables Networks to Respond to Evolving IT Needs

whitePaper | August 2, 2021

Traditional methods of building wide area networks (WANs) have always had limitations, but fell even further behind with the adoption of the cloud and remote work. Software-defined WANs (SD-WANs) have simplified many aspects of WAN management, but are unable to fully break away from the hub-and-spoke model due to security requirements. Modern WAN-as-a-Service offerings address these shortcomings while providing organizations cost savings and improving network performance.

Game-Changing Business Model: Private LTE for AMI and Smart Utility Programs

whitePaper | December 1, 2019

The landscape of telecommunications options available to support utilities’ Operational Technology (OT) solutions is rapidly evolving - at a pace compared only by the changing needs of the OT requirements themselves. As utilities replace first generation Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solutions with current more feature-rich systems and expand the reach of traditional Distribution Automation (DA), Field Mobility (FM) and other existing solutions; new options are required for device connectivity and backhaul. The potential explosion of ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoT) devices will further change the utilities’ needs.
