The traditional branch office WAN began to be deployed over fifteen years ago. The primary goal of that WAN was to connect branch office users with the resources they needed to access in one of their company’s data centers. Some of the key characteristics of the traditional WAN were that it: Used MPLS for connectivity; Featured network elements that were hardware-based; Backhauled Internet traffic to a corporate data center. Unfortunately, until recently there hadn’t been a fundamentally new WAN technology or service introduced into the marketplace since the turn of the century.
