The Linux Foundation and Google Cloud Launch Nephio

The_Linux_Foundation
The Linux Foundation, a non - profit organization dedicated to enabling mass innovation via open source, today announced the launch of project Nephio in collaboration with Google Cloud and industry experts. The Linux Foundation serves as a forum for sustained ecosystem, developer, and open source ecosystem development and variety, as well as cooperation across open source ecosystems.

It is difficult to build, manage, and deploy scalable 5G networks across various edge locations. To achieve agility and optimization in cloud-based deployments, the Telco sector need real cloud-native automation that is faster, simpler, and easier. To solve these issues, Google Cloud and the Linux Foundation developed "Nephio." Airtel, Bell Canada, Elisa, Equinix, Jio, Orange, Rakuten Mobile, TIM, TELUS, Vapor IO, Virgin Media O2, WINDTRE are among the founding companies, as are network function, service, and infrastructure vendors Aarna Networks, ARM, Casa-systems, DZS, Ericsson, F5, Intel, Juniper, Mavenir, Nokia, Parallel Wireless, and vmware.

Cloud Native Principles have gone a long way, and as we see Cloud Service Providers collaborate with Telecom Service Providers and Enterprises, a new approach to easing network function automation is developing.

Nephio's goal is to provide carrier-grade, simple, open Kubernetes-based cloud native intent automation and standard automation templates that significantly simplify the deployment and maintenance of multi-vendor cloud infrastructure and network services across large scale edge deployments.

Moreover, with a true cloud native approach, Nephio will allow faster onboarding of network services to production, including provisioning of underlying cloud infrastructure, as well as lower costs of cloud and network infrastructure adoption.
