Open RF Association Drives Industry Collaboration

The Open RF Association (openrftm), an industry consortium dedicated to developing an open 5G ecosystem of interoperable hardware and software across member multi-mode RF (radio frequency) front-end and chipset platforms, today announced the completion of the first phase of a study defining RF power levels used in 5G handsets, in partnership with Signals Research Group, to help the industry better optimize data throughput performance and, ultimately, battery life.

Open RF Association President Kevin Schoenrock, said that “This project is an important step toward optimizing battery life of 5G devices. Comprehensive data around the power levels in 5G handsets will be critical for our members, and the industry, in order to develop leading-edge technologies to set the performance standard for next-generation wireless devices.”

Members and affiliates of the Open RF Association supplied data and analysis to the research, which will be utilized by the consortium to produce a histogram of RF power levels used in 5G phones under real-world network circumstances. Understanding network use cases allows openrf members to create best-in-class, optimal solutions.

With the field data collected from a commercial 5G SA network and the detailed analytical work that Signals Research Group performed on behalf of openrf, there are now 5G PA characterization profiles in place. These profile curves will greatly benefit openrf and its member companies.”

Michael Thelander, President of Signals Research Group

The research is the first in a series commissioned by the Open RF Association to help update and enhance power profile data as smartphones and iot wireless devices grow as 5G networks are built out. The newly defined consumption curves will offer the industry with a critical data set that will enable interoperable system optimization across openrf members to enhance system performance over time. Openrf will continue to collaborate with Signals Research Group on the study's advancement. Mobile Experts, Inc. Will also help gather and integrate new data as the research expands to include all 5G devices.

Mobile Experts, Inc. Is a market analysis organization for the mobile infrastructure and mobile handset industries, whereas Signals Research Group is a thought-leading field research and consulting services firm addressing the wireless telecommunications sector.

The preliminary research is planned to be made available to members in June 2022. Additional field data from operators and chipset vendors interested in further developing real-world benchmark transmitter performance are welcome. Please contact the Open RF Association if you want to learn more about the project or provide data.
