The first Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Spectrum Horizons Experimental licence for creating 6G technology in sub-Terahertz (THz) frequency bands, between 95 gigahertz (GHz) and 3 terahertz (THz), has been given to Keysight Technologies, Inc., a top technology company that provides advanced design and validation solutions to help drive innovation to connect as well as secure the entire globe.

The FCC licence allows Keysight to create cutting-edge technology which is used by academic and industrial researchers to speed up advances in data-intensive high-bandwidth applications, imaging, and sensing. Keysight is also the first business to receive FCC license for frequencies higher than 246 GHz and 275.5 GHz. 6G innovation can achieve high data throughput speeds of 100 Gbps to 1 terabit per second (Tbps), as well as ultra-low latency over short distances, thanks to access to huge swathes of contiguous spectrum in sub-THz frequencies.

Roger Nichols, Keysight’s 5G & 6G program director said that “Innovations in sub-THz spectrum will support use-cases such as immersive telepresence, digital twins and extended reality, which is all real-and-virtual combined environments and human-machine interactions generated by computer technology and wearables. Using the FCC Spectrum Horizons license enables Keysight to strengthen our commitment to 6G technology, which will allow innovators to pioneer across the novel terrain of future-generation communications systems.”

Keysight sought for the FCC licences in order to encourage 6G technology development even while guaranteeing that existing approved customers are not harmed. The various FCC licence approvals come as a result of Keysight's active engagement in advancing US spectrum policy through consortia like the mmWave Coalition, of which it is a co - founder. The mmWave Coalition is a coalition of forward-thinking enterprises dedicated to reducing legislative impediments to technology that operate at frequencies between 95 and 450 GHz.

The use of sub-THz spectrum to power the next generation of wireless technology is one key enabler to merging the physical and digital worlds, which will result in creative ways for people to interact with their surroundings. Keysight takes an active role in several government-sponsored 6G initiatives around the globe. These are critical in generating momentum for technology that will accelerate digitalization and drive innovation for consumers, government and businesses.”
