InnoPhase, Inc., a fabless semiconductor company pioneering advanced radio solutions for 5G/Cellular infrastructure equipment, recently announced the Hermes TWO digital radio device, a revolutionary product for more efficient cellular networks.
Utilizing the company's patented radio architecture, the device provides exceptional system efficiency and performance enhancements. It integrates numerous essential radio components onto a single CMOS semiconductor die, including Tx/Rx chains, power amplifiers, digital signal processing with time/frequency conversions (FFT/iFFT), and system control. This revolutionary technology allows a highly efficient system integration for cellular network radio units, like enterprise small cells.
The total cost of ownership (TCO) must be addressed to accelerate commercial and private 5G deployments. To justify a new network technology migration, purchase, installation, and operational costs must meet financial, performance, and efficiency goals. Additionally, ABI Research states that using semiconductor chipsets with less energy consumption and lower nanometer nodes is essential to reduce network TCO.
The Hermes TWO "Digital-to-RF" radio architecture converts packetized O-RAN symbols over SERDES to amplified RF power. 4G/5G Low-PHY features in the device include digital signal processing, advanced digital pre-distortion (DPD), and crest-factor reduction (CFR). A CMOS digital power amplifier (DPA) provides 3W peak / 500mW average transmit output power. The product facilitates a 2T2R or 4T4R O-RAN FS-7.2 enterprise solution. This novel level of integration marks a step towards cheaper and more efficient cellular network radios.
Hermes TWO devices will be embedded into a 4T4R O-RAN 7.2a small cell Radio Development Kit (RDK) to accelerate validation and customer product development. Lead customers and partners will be able to receive product samples in Q2 of 2023. The first RDK for 5G CBRS/C-Band is anticipated to be available by mid-2023.
