Cisco Buys July Systems, Adding Indoor Location Services Capabilities to Its Mix

Cisco today said it intends to buy location services company July Systems to boost its Enterprise WiFi platform with indoor location services capabilities. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. July Systems is based out of Burlingame, California and has offices in Bangalore, India. Its cloud-based mobile experience and location services software platform, Proximity MX, provides enterprises with location insights and intelligence. July Systems has used Cisco as an OEM for Cisco’s Connected Mobile Experience (CMX) platform, and its location-based cloud is OEM’d by the networking company. July Systems’ platform will enable indoor location services capabilities on Cisco’s WiFi platform in order to gain insight into visitor behavior and drive better network experiences for both customers and employees. Its features include instant customer activation, data-driven behavioral insights, and end-to-end SLA from network devices to the cloud. Once the acquisition is finalized, July Systems’ platform and capabilities will be initially added to Cisco CMX, but its capabilities could be used in other Cisco applications. July Systems capabilities have been integrated and distributed to Meraki customers in the past. Its team will join Cisco’s Enterprise Networking group led by Scott Harrell. According to the blog post announcing the purchase, this is part of Cisco’s move to support intent-based networking. At its recent Cisco Live conference, the company debuted APIs that enable third-party equipment to be part of its campus networks and WAN. These new developer capabilities are part of Cisco’s greater effort to build an open, programmable intent-based networking platform.
