While cybersecurity seems to get most of the focus when it comes to security of data centers, physical security remains a critical consideration for data center operators. In 2021, one of AWS' data centers was the subject of a credible bomb threat plot. And in general, physical threat activity has dramatically increased since the beginning of 2020, with political unrest and economic inequality cited as factors.

Competition by digital native companies and the onslaught of data coming from connected devices and applications is changing how organizations do business. And it’s altering what data centers need to be and do. The vast amount of data these facilities need to contend with is a major factor driving data center change. Indeed, estimates suggest that data center workloads with more than double between 2014 and next year.

As operators prepare to launch 5G services, it is evident that in order to effectively and efficiently deliver the utmost performance, 5G network build-outs need to be based on an architecture which is open, flexible and scalable - across all the network domains.
