Verizon moves 800 Gbps of data on a single wavelength
  • Verizon to deploy its new optical configuration in the fiber network in the second half of 2020.

  • Verizon's 800G trial on its live fiber network was notable because it showed equipment interoperability from two different vendors.

  • The use of this new solution shows the evolution to a more software-driven and automated network with tunable capacity from 200Gbps to 800Gbps per wavelength.

Verizon, along with Ciena and Juniper Networks, have recently completed a test in Verizon’s live fiber network, transporting 800 Gbps of data on a single wavelength. This came as a breakthrough since 5G promises blazing fast gigabit speeds, super low single-digit millisecond latency, and huge scalability. It will be able to connect billions of devices and moving terabytes of data from new and exciting, never-before-seen use cases including video streaming, virtual reality, cloud computing, and machine learning and artificial intelligence. To move that much amount of overwhelming data, Verizon engineers are also advancing the connecting layer of fiber.

While 5G holds the promise of connecting billions of devices while moving terabytes of data, it needs advanced fiber optic transport on the backend in order to serve new applications such as video streaming, virtual reality, cloud computing, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Verizon's 800G trial on its live fiber network was notable because it showed equipment interoperability from two different suppliers and the capability to quadruple the typical capacity carried on a wavelength.

The test traffic was transmitted between two Juniper Networks QFX 5220 packet platforms across two Ciena 6500 platforms powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent optics.

“800G is possible today with our WaveLogic 5 Extreme technology and this live Network trial is remarkable because it shows the progression of capacity and efficiencies. Programmable 200Gbps-800Gbps transmission will allow Verizon to effectively respond to fluctuating user demands by creating a more software-driven, programmable and highly scalable network.”

-Scott McFeely, Senior Vice President of Global Products and Services, Ciena

The use of this new coherent optics and equipment from Ciena and Juniper Networks demonstrates the evolution to a more software-driven and automated network with tunable capacity from 200Gbps to 800Gbps per wavelength, allowing Verizon to maximize efficiencies with the ability to optimize capacity for any distance and adjust to unpredictable traffic demands  dynamically to meet customer needs.

“As network traffic continues to grow sharply, driven by video and other new 5G uses cases, it’s imperative for communications service providers and infrastructure vendors to work closely together for rapid innovation. New 400GbE packet routers and 800G coherent optical systems help drive down the cost per bit with improved scale and density. We’re excited to have played a role in this successful trial and look forward to help deliver new, high-bandwidth services to end-users.

- Sally Bament, Vice President, Cloud & Service Provider Marketing, Juniper Networks

Verizon will begin deploying this new optical configuration in the fiber network in the second half of 2020.

Last year, Ciena, Internet2 and Juniper Networks announced they had provisioned live traffic over a 1,367-mile circuit using a single 400-gigabit Ethernet link. The 400G path used a new open line system capable of 400G and 800G wavelengths that Internet2, Ciena and CenturyLink are deploying as the first segments of Internet2's next generation infrastructure initiative.

Mavenir and HCL Collaborate on Integration and Delivery of O-RAN Compliant Radios

Mavenir, the Network Software Provider building the future of networks with cloud-native software that runs on any cloud and transforms the way the world connects, today announced a strategic partnership with HCL Technologies (HCL), a leading global technology company with expertise in network systems testing. This partnership helps accelerate the market availability of O-RAN split 7.2 compliant Remote Radiohead Units (RRUs) while establishing a business model to meet the growing demand and evolving requirements for O-RAN RRUs. Today’s RRU ecosystem has expanded to offer Communication Service Providers (CSPs) a significantly wider choice of 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, massive MIMO (mMIMO), millimeter Wave (mmWave), small cell and indoor radios. In turn, the number of RRU partners that Mavenir works with continues to grow, with each partner releasing new and sophisticated radios, with new software, across different radio technologies, output power, antenna dimensions and spectrum to meet the evolving needs of O-RAN customers. The collaboration brings together HCL’s platform for third-party RRU testing and Mavenir’s full Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU) RAN software stacks. RRU vendors will, as a result, be given the ability to work directly with HCL to assess their O-RAN interfaces and integrate with Mavenir’s O-RAN compliant cloud-native CU/DU software. By simplifying testing and validation across multiple O-RAN interoperability profiles, the collaboration will help vendors fast-track validation of frequency variants and the increasingly diverse RRU offerings being demanded by the O-RAN market. This partnership will benefit both RRU vendors and CSPs by supporting the continued expansion of the radio ecosystem and helping to establish a self-sustaining RRU business model: Vendors will be able to rapidly validate their O-RAN compliant RRUs as they develop portfolios of products targeted at different deployment scenarios. CSPs will be able to more easily identify the available O-RAN compliant RRU options for specific use cases and locations. “We are directly addressing requests from customers and partners to speed the integration of new RRU products. The growing scale of the O-RAN industry now demands such a model. And thanks to O-RAN and open interfaces, new players such as HCL can enter the market to effectively serve the market needs,As more O-RAN RRU products become available and RRU partners are enabled to respond rapidly to their customers, CSPs worldwide will be able to take advantage of the full range of their spectrum assets and benefit from the rapidly accelerating RRU ecosystem.” -Mavenir’s Puneet Sethi, SVP/GM RAN Business Unit. The Mavenir-HCL partnership helps accelerate the O-RAN market, bringing a new suite of product offerings to CSPs and enterprises alike. This sets the stage for a nascent ecosystem accelerating future innovation across key verticals on a global scale,” said HCL’s Rajiv Shesh, Corporate Vice President, Engineering and R&D Services. “HCL is bringing together many decades of network testing experience, 5G expertise, state of the art lab facilities and advanced automation tools to validate the interoperability between Mavenir and RRU partners. HCL provides the necessary visibility and reporting capability that enables operators and enterprises in deploying best-of-breed Mavenir O-RAN solutions. About Mavenir Mavenir is building the future of networks and pioneering advanced technology, focusing on the vision of a single, software-based automated network that runs on any cloud. As the industry’s only end-to-end, cloud-native network software provider, Mavenir is focused on transforming the way the world connects, accelerating software network transformation for 250+ Communications Service Providers in over 120 countries, which serve more than 50% of the world’s subscribers. www.mavenir.com
