Ericsson deployed a Wi-Fi on Wheels system for Comcast at the Internet & Television Expo (INTX) 2016 in Boston, MA. Ericsson equipped a customised Ford Transit 350 cargo van with six Wi-Fi access points, enough to serve its 2,500 estimated attendees. The company said that such vehicles will potentially give thousands of people outdoor wireless access in cities around the US. Comcast intends to use the vans to support sporting events, community activities and emergency response initiatives....

Ericsson has created some software plug-ins for networks to evolve toward 5G, perhaps in an effort to generate some buzz around 5G while it goes through the sluggish process of spectrum deals and standards work. Ericsson is two years into a three-year cost-cutting program -- but needs to make still greater savings. Ericsson is preparing to lay off between 3,000 and 4,000 staff this summer, according to Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.
