FUTURE-PROOFING 5G ARCHITECTURE WITH OPEN-RAN

Article | May 19, 2021

The RAN (Radio Access Network) architecture for mobile networks includes a remote radio unit (RRU) located at the top of a cell tower, which communicates with a baseband unit (BBU) at the base of the tower. The hardware and communication interfaces are owned by a specific vendor, and its software-driven functionality is tightly coupled within the hardware. Traditionally, this has worked well for mobile network operators (MNOs). However, there are several drawbacks to consider – for instance, upgrading or changing the wireless network demands physical hardware replacements throughout the network, which is cost-inefficient, labor-intensive, and time-consuming. Furthermore, the equipment and interfaces that connect the hardware are owned by the vendors that originally supplied them, which locks MNOs into existing relationships with them.

Four reasons why NB-IoT is the enabler of mass IoT apps and tracking

Article | May 19, 2021

Everyone understands the need to track and trace and tracking was one of the first apps that kick-started the M2M industry at scale about two decades ago. It now encompasses everything from routine shipments to monitoring of high value equipment and has even further proved its worth in the pandemic, enabling tracking of essential shipments and cold chain logistics for vaccines. With narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) now rolling out across the world, the technology is powering tracking applications for the mass-market, bringing new capabilities and functions to tracking and opening up new markets and use cases. Four essential attributes of NB-IoT, in addition to the fundamental ability of throughput, were discussed in a recent Quectel webinar

QUANTUM CRYPTOGRAPHY: HOW QUANTUM COMPUTING WILL HELP SECURE 5G NETWORKS?

Article | May 19, 2021

Quantum Computing is the use of quantum-mechanical phenomena such as superposition and entanglement to perform computation. Quantum computers perform calculations based on the probability of an object’s state before it is measured – instead of just 1s or 0s – which means they have the potential to process more data compared to classical computers. A quantum computer works with particles that can be in superposition. Observing the market trends we can say that quantum computing will change our computer architecture, IT architecture, and even corporate structure.

Nokia, Japan's KDDI Complete 5G Core Standalone (SA) Network Trial

Article | May 19, 2021

Nokia and Japan's KDDI have completed a 5G core standalone (SA) network trial, moving the operator closer to being able to provide 5G-enabled services. The standalone trial, using Nokia’s 5G AirGile cloud-native core solution, was conducted entirely independently of previous generations’ mobile network architecture. With a comprehensive 5G core portfolio, Nokia claims that it is well placed to assist KDDI in analyzing the network evolution steps and early deployment of 5G core Stand Alone services, like network slicing in which service providers virtually partition network capacity to subscribers based on customized use case needs.
