What are the implications of LinkedIn’s latest data breach?

Article | June 30, 2021

Although the cause is as yet unknown, this breach is likely to have the same culprit as most large scale data breaches that have occurred in recent memory, through a simple misconfiguration of a server or shared repository. As the sheer size, scale, and footprint of global technology vendors like Microsoft, Facebook, Google, and so on continues to grow, so too does the opportunity for simple errors to make their way into some infrastructure configurations that can then be exploited.

AT&T expands its 5G network to 22 new cities and introduces mmWave 5G+ in some markets

Article | March 5, 2020

5G on mmWave frequencies is the fastest offering, but it has pretty severe range limitations. This is the same 5G technology that Verizon is using, and it requires customers to be in very specific locations to connect to it. But when you can get it, AT&T promises speeds up to 2Gbps. Only the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra support mmWave on AT&T and not the carrier’s variant of the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. The company’s mmWave network, which they are calling “5G+,” is available in 35 cities. Last month, AT&T expanded its coverage of sub-6GHz 5G to more cities. This week, they are adding 22 more markets to the list, bringing the total number up to 80. Those markets include:

Ericsson USA 5G Smart Factory produces its first base stations

Article | March 5, 2020

Ericsson's (NASDAQ: ERIC) smart factory in Lewisville, Texas, has produced its first 5G base station. Announced last year, the factory will be one of the most advanced manufacturing facilities in the industry when it is fully operational later this year. The first product manufactured at the factory is the millimeter-wave Street Macro solution, which is key to Ericsson’s 5G portfolio for its North American customers. All radio access components are housed in one lightweight enclosure, allowing service providers to rapidly grow 5G coverage in complex city environments.

Making Sense of the 5G Spectrum Mess

Article | March 25, 2020

Spectrum has been the lifeblood of the wireless industry since its inception. Without it, mobile connectivity simply doesn’t exist. That remains true as ever in a 5G world, but 5G also dramatically changes the breadth and depth of spectrum that is required to power lower latency, higher bandwidth, and more connections per cell site. The spectrum held by most operators today is not enough to deliver all of these key features of 5G, and early 5G customers have experienced these limitations first hand. Operators will need hundreds of megahertz of clean spectrum to provide 5G networks sporting the oft-promised multi-gigabit speeds. Network operators will, in most cases, need a healthy mix of low-, mid-, and high-band spectrum to fulfill that promise. None of America’s mobile network operators have the right ingredients to mix a genuine 5G cocktail today.
