One year ago, Tableau Foundation launched our Racial Justice Data Initiative out of a core belief that data can and should play a transformative role in the fight for racial equity and justice in the United States. We have forged new partnerships and deepened existing relationships with organizations committed to using data to raise awareness of inequities, point to solutions, and advocate for progress.
Just today, we announced two new partnerships that will deepen our commitment to advancing racial equity in the Southern US with—Southern Economic Advancement Project (SEAP) and Fair Count. We believe that data can be a powerful resource in both identifying the experiences and challenges of people whose voices we may not normally hear and help create the necessary programs, policies, and resources needed to ensure these same people are not left behind
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted on a final order Feb. 28 to auction mid-band spectrum for use by providers of 5G wireless services, but the vote spurred some criticism from members of both parties in Congress. The auction is scheduled for December 2020. The FCC, in a 3 to 2 vote, ordered that 280 megahertz of spectrum in the C-band be cleared no later than December 2025 so it can be repurposed for 5G providers. The spectrum is now used by satellite service providers, who are in line to receive $9.7 billion if they clear the spectrum early.
CIOs know that ubiquitous connectivity across domains—campus, branch, cloud, and edge, wired or wireless—is a baseline requirement for building a digital enterprise. But, as CISOs know, as the network fabric spreads to encompass devices and location-agnostic data and compute resources, the need for end-to-end integrated security is equally paramount. Add in the necessity to continuously monitor and maintain application performance throughout campus and branch and edge locations and you create an enormous workload for NetOps and SecOps teams that are simultaneously dealing with static CapEx and OpEx budgets. Often the result is a tug-of-war between the teams: one striving to keep the network optimized for performance and availability, the other striving to keeping data, applications, and devices secure.
Mobile operators are racing to upgrade their networks with 5G connectivity while at the same time expanding 4G LTE coverage throughout the world. Though the latest generations of cellular technology offer faster performance and other benefits over their predecessors, they're vulnerable to some of the same security flaws. A report released Thursday by Positive Technologies explains how and why existing 4G and new 5G networks can be hurt by Denial-of-Service (DOS) attacks in particular. For its report "Security Assessment of Diameter Networks 2020," Positive Technologies simulated external attacks against 28 telecom operators in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America during 2018 and 2019. Specifically, the company looked at 4G and 5G networks using Diameter signaling protocol, a method for coordinating data among different Internet Protocol (IP) network elements.
