No, 5G Does Not Cause Coronavirus

COVID-19, better known as the Coronavirus, is a respiratory disease that has spread to over 100 countries and has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). But if you spend more than five minutes online, you’ll find someone shouting that 5G is the real cause of people’s illnesses. Simply put, these claims are factually false. 5G represents the fifth-generation of the wireless telecom technology that smartphones and other devices use for communication and connecting to the internet. As with 4G LTE, 3G, and everything before it, the wireless network is transmitted over radio waves, a non-harmful part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Time for telcos to step up on 5G app collaboration opportunities for consumers

Article | May 18, 2023

The path to offering 5G rich apps for consumers is complex, especially in terms of both investment versus straight collaboration (with less risk). Even the telco behemoths are trying to get this right. But Omdia has identified six ways operators can participate in 5G rich apps development. One refreshing initiative sees telcos partnering with other telcos to lower barriers to entry to XR content via the Global XR Content Telco Alliance.

RAN Management and Orchestration Is Central to Operators Gaining Control Over Their Own Networks

Article | July 10, 2023

The promise of Open vRAN is to give back to mobile operators some form of control over their networks. The “open” refers to the opening of RAN interfaces. It is critical because it gives operators the possibility to buy the radio unit and the baseband unit from different vendors, rather than having to buy an integrated system, and therefore helps them diversify their suppliers and reduce their dependence on traditional vendors. The “v” refers to virtual. Virtualization is about disaggregating hardware and software and enabling the use of commercial off-the-shelf servers, instead of the usual purpose-built hardware, to run network functions in order to increase flexibility and reduce costs. Across Asia-Pacific, the announcements and activities from operators including Airtel, Axiata, NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile, Smartfren and Telkomsel indicate a growing appetite for open and virtualized radio access networks. In countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, open RAN can for example help to address the challenges of remote connectivity and to deploy a network in places where it has been traditionally difficult to achieve a satisfactory return on investment.

NOT SO FAST: HOW CORONAVIRUS IS DELAYING THE 5G ROLLOUT

Article | April 20, 2020

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been relentlessly spreading across the world. Countless events, both international and domestic, big and small, have been either postponed or canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. This was supposed to be the year the 5G network rollout would make the technology mainstream and widely available. But the much-anticipated rollout of the lightning-quick 5G network may now be in the slow lane. Because of the increasing spread of the disease in many European countries, various 5G network spectrum regulators have postponed the long-awaited auction of the 5G spectrum. These auctions were crucial for network providers to launch or expand the already existing 5G network systems.

Google bans 5G coronavirus conspiracy theory ads

Techradar | April 08, 2020

Google has announced a crackdown on adverts around misguided conspiracy theories concerning a link between coronavirus and 5G networks. The search giant has said it will be banning advertising on search terms and keywords that relate to “misleading health claims” surrounding 5G and coronavirus. The news follows a number of attacks by conspiracy theorists on 5G masts across the UK, despite repeated advice from scientists that there is no link between the global pandemic and the high-speed networks. This looks to prevents companies and individuals from profiteering from public health emergencies by blocking their adverts from appearing in search results. Earlier this week, scientists, the UK government and the country's mobile industry joined together to plead for the spread of misinformation to stop. As well as attacks on masts, telecoms and networking infrastructure workers have also faced abuse and assault.
