The current global pandemic is drastically impacting our daily lives, and as a result, the relevance of such digital applications and services is accelerating. For example, we suddenly see an increased need for communication services, tools for remote collaboration, and fast and reliable access to data – whether it’s from the office, the home or somewhere in between. Augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) are two technology concepts providing significant benefits in this new digital reality. These technologies open new ways of working in areas such as manufacturing, gaming, media, automotive and healthcare, allowing for both increased productivity and completely new user experiences. In the Ericsson ConsumerLab merged reality report, 7 out of 10 early adopters expect VR and AR to change everyday life fundamentally.

The next steps for 3GPP, release 16 and 17, will introduce additional features to further enhance the support for new use cases related to smart manufacturing, connected vehicles, electrical power distribution and more, such as drones which are controlled by the network. All of these potentially critical use cases require ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) which means high reliability and availability, as well as very low end-to-end latency in the range of a few milliseconds. The 5G system is designed with this in mind, and the continued evolution of 5G New Radio (NR) will continue to optimize mobility performance further. A critical part of this is to reduce the handover interruption time between cells in the 5G network.

Antennas are fundamental to the performance of connected devices, but are often implemented as an afterthought, resulting not only in sub-optimal performance, but also in less-than-ideal form factor. It can also have a negative impact on cost for the device as a whole. It is therefore essential that organisations prioritise antenna design as part of a holistic device design philosophy – bear in mind that it is practically impossible to fix bad antenna design. Early decisions need to be made regarding the relative merits of embedded or external devices and then attention can turn to optimising antenna integration.

Unfortunately, 5G comes with a new level of network complexity – and I predict it’s going to be more difficult than ever to understand the true experience.
