How Race to 5G in U.S. Hit Speed Bump Called C-Band

From ovens to refrigerators, automobiles to surgeon’s tools, more and more items are connected wirelessly to the internet. As use of such devices soars, so does the demand for airwaves to carry all that data. The need for more space -- more spectrum -- to carry mobile signals is causing friction in a once-placid policy arena. In one high-profile struggle over a swath of airwaves known as the C-band, a leading issue is whether taxpayers or foreign satellite companies should enjoy the multibillion-dollar fruits of a planned sale of the frequencies.

As 5G growth accelerates, CSPs have new opportunities for network differentiation and service growth

Article | June 15, 2023

Despite the COVID-induced interruptions in the first half of 2020, 5G preparations and deployment continued in earnest in the second half of 2020 and now the market – vendors, CSPS, OEMs – are ready to bring 5G to the masses of users. The arrival of Apple’s first 5G devices in 4Q20 marked the tipping point of global consumer readiness, now extending from early-adopters. After the initial phase of network launches that saw coverage built-out in major urban centres, 5G service providers should now focus on expanding coverage to as many areas of high-data demand as possible. At the same time, as CSPs gauge their 5G roll-out strategies, they shouldn’t ignore rural areas with limited-to-no high-speed broadband coverage. In many markets, particularly developing ones, CSPs should carefully assess network-sharing as a way to cost-effectively tap pent-up demand, especially given the accelerating remote working trend.

How a modern data stack is unlocking agility across the retail industry

Article | July 5, 2023

In today’s shop-from-anywhere world, the model for success continues to change. Tried and true techniques are becoming obsolete as consumer expectations evolve, demand volatility rises, and supply chain disruptions become more frequent. Retailers are also dealing with online shopping surges that add new complexities to existing data strategies due to an influx of raw, unprepped, and largely underutilized data.

NOT SO FAST: HOW CORONAVIRUS IS DELAYING THE 5G ROLLOUT

Article | May 18, 2023

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been relentlessly spreading across the world. Countless events, both international and domestic, big and small, have been either postponed or canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. This was supposed to be the year the 5G network rollout would make the technology mainstream and widely available. But the much-anticipated rollout of the lightning-quick 5G network may now be in the slow lane. Because of the increasing spread of the disease in many European countries, various 5G network spectrum regulators have postponed the long-awaited auction of the 5G spectrum. These auctions were crucial for network providers to launch or expand the already existing 5G network systems.

RAN Management and Orchestration Is Central to Operators Gaining Control Over Their Own Networks

Article | July 6, 2021

The promise of Open vRAN is to give back to mobile operators some form of control over their networks. The “open” refers to the opening of RAN interfaces. It is critical because it gives operators the possibility to buy the radio unit and the baseband unit from different vendors, rather than having to buy an integrated system, and therefore helps them diversify their suppliers and reduce their dependence on traditional vendors. The “v” refers to virtual. Virtualization is about disaggregating hardware and software and enabling the use of commercial off-the-shelf servers, instead of the usual purpose-built hardware, to run network functions in order to increase flexibility and reduce costs. Across Asia-Pacific, the announcements and activities from operators including Airtel, Axiata, NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile, Smartfren and Telkomsel indicate a growing appetite for open and virtualized radio access networks. In countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, open RAN can for example help to address the challenges of remote connectivity and to deploy a network in places where it has been traditionally difficult to achieve a satisfactory return on investment.

Google bans 5G coronavirus conspiracy theory ads

Techradar | April 08, 2020

Google has announced a crackdown on adverts around misguided conspiracy theories concerning a link between coronavirus and 5G networks. The search giant has said it will be banning advertising on search terms and keywords that relate to “misleading health claims” surrounding 5G and coronavirus. The news follows a number of attacks by conspiracy theorists on 5G masts across the UK, despite repeated advice from scientists that there is no link between the global pandemic and the high-speed networks. This looks to prevents companies and individuals from profiteering from public health emergencies by blocking their adverts from appearing in search results. Earlier this week, scientists, the UK government and the country's mobile industry joined together to plead for the spread of misinformation to stop. As well as attacks on masts, telecoms and networking infrastructure workers have also faced abuse and assault.
