A Software-defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is an evolution of traditional WAN that allows businesses to leverage different networking options and transport services to connect users to applications. This includes the MPLS, LTE and broadband internet services. The SD-WAN is a better, more efficient means of supporting latency-sensitive applications. Enterprise customers can make use of this new network to increase network and application performance and/or lower costs, all of which contribute to improved user experience.

Intelligence Brief: How will Covid-19 impact 5G?

Article | March 25, 2020

Mobile technology will help to get us through this whether that be from supporting health services, allowing more people to work remotely or simply providing a link to the outside world for people self-isolating. That said, for the average consumer priorities have clearly changed. With the epicentre of the crisis now in Europe, many potential early adopters of the latest technologies will now need to concern themselves with their financial and personal wellbeing rather than the latest handset. This year is already shaping up to be a bad one for everyone, but what does it mean for 5G vendors, operators and users? How will the crisis affect national rollouts and what should we expect to see in the future? There is little doubt that this is the most significant challenge mobile network and handset vendors have faced.

4G, 5G Open RAN technology trials to launch this year

Article | March 18, 2020

Trials of 4G and 5G Open RAN will commence in the UK, Germany, Spain and Brazil this year after Telefónica confirmed a “strategic ecosystem collaboration” with Altiostar, Gigatera Communications, Intel, Supermicro and Xilinx, Inc. Telefónica said the partnership will examine design and developments, integration efforts, operational procedures and testing activities required to deliver Open RAN across its global footprint. This work will specifically include development, optimisation, testing and industrialisation of Open RAN technologies. In a statement, the firm said: “Open RAN represents a paradigm change in network technology where radio baseband hardware is based on standard servers, interfaces between network equipment are open and standardized by the O-RAN Alliance, and the baseband software runs in the Telco Cloud by adopting the Automation and Zero-Touch capabilities that the NFV/SDN paradigm can bring.”

How 5G can build the connected industry of the future

Article | August 17, 2021

Despite a global pandemic and the associated economic challenges, the world has moved to 5G four times faster than it did with 4G LTE, according to 5G Americas. In the midst of this rollout, how can industries ensure that the benefits of 5G investment warrant the long-term investment costs? Or to put it another way, how can industries leverage 5G technology to build cost-efficient connected industry on a global scale? The answer is the intelligent edge. The intelligent edge is the analysis of data and development of solutions at the site where the data is generated. By doing this, the intelligent edge reduces latency, costs and security risks, thus making the associated business more efficient. As 5G puts compute closer to the user (whether that be a human or a device) it enables a new paradigm of capabilities with AI, machine learning and a host of related use cases.
