Cisco SD-WAN – the easiest way to connect private links to the cloud from your data center or even branches

Article | July 5, 2023

Applications and workloads have been moving to the cloud for some time. This transition has been putting a lot of pressure on IT organizations to support the trend by extending their networks to support cloud connectivity. Cisco SD-WAN enables your hybrid connectivity to the cloud We at Cisco have innovated on multiple fronts to help our customers with this transition by providing a deep level of integration with many of the leading cloud service providers (CSPs), including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Here, we highlight one key aspect of this innovation that allows private cloud links to be available as part of the SD-WAN network, enabling hybrid connectivity to the cloud and multicloud. Now our customers can benefit from all the rich features that our Cisco SD-WAN solution offers including application-aware routing, intent-based path selection, and security policy enforcement. Private direct cloud connectivity to CSPs such as AWS Direct Cloud Connect, Google Cloud Interconnect, and Azure ExpressRoute are becoming popular lately, as they provide customers with optimal connectivity similar to what MPLS did in the past, but in a more agile and on-demand fashion. The only problem is those services are normally acquired separately and customers must determine how to manage them as part of a larger WAN solution including configuration, monitoring, and so on. The on-demand nature of these circuits provides customers with major savings, but also turns automation into a key requirement for management. Enter Cisco SD-WAN release 20.6 Beginning with Cisco SD-WAN release 20.6, a Cisco SD-WAN customer may use Cloud OnRamp for Mutlicloud to automate and simplify cloud connectivity across private and public transports. What is great is this task, that used to require hours and days to setup, now only takes minutes as outlined by the following integration documents for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud respectively: Configure AWS Direct Connect as a Transport with SD-WAN in a Click Configure Azure Express Route as Transport with SD-WAN in a Click Configure Google Cloud Interconnect as a Transport with Cisco SD-WAN in a Click Once a customer implements such connectivity, they will have the ability to steer any type of traffic through it with a customizable and flexible SD-WAN policy. This solution also allows customers to eliminate some limitations imposed on them by the CSPs, such as restricting the number of prefixes advertised via BGP over private links, thus providing better scalability and control. For customers who already use Cisco SD-WAN Cloud Interconnect at middle-mile POPs, such as with Equinix or Megaport, rolling out this solution as a test can be extremely simple given the automation discussed above. The best way to find out how easy this solution is, is to try it.

The tool to improve AI transparency has arrived: AI Registers

Article | June 16, 2023

Transparency, explainability and trust are big and pressing topics in AI/ML today. Nobody wants to find themselves at the receiving end of a black AI box system that makes consequential decisions (e.g., about jobs, healthcare, citizenship, etc.), especially if those decision are unfair, biased, or just plainly not in our favor. And most organizations agree that consumer trust and confidence that AI is being used ethically and transparently are key to unlocking its true potential. And while there are literally hundreds of documents describing and prescribing AI principles, frameworks and other good things, last year there was no practical tool that could help with implementing transparency. And this tool is AI registers… The Cities of Helsinki and Amsterdam jointly announce the launch of their public AI registers. The two registers were developed in collaboration with Saidot.ai, a Finnish company which specializes in “bringing transparency to consumer services” and which, to the best of my knowledge, is the only vendor in this space. The idea for the company grew from the personal frustration of its founder and CEO, Meeri Haataja, who was “seeing how important transparency of AI is for the future of each one of us, and not being able to find too many meaningful ways to act on it.”

Five ways to win at antenna integration

Article | July 10, 2023

Antennas are fundamental to the performance of connected devices, but are often implemented as an afterthought, resulting not only in sub-optimal performance, but also in less-than-ideal form factor. It can also have a negative impact on cost for the device as a whole. It is therefore essential that organisations prioritise antenna design as part of a holistic device design philosophy – bear in mind that it is practically impossible to fix bad antenna design. Early decisions need to be made regarding the relative merits of embedded or external devices and then attention can turn to optimising antenna integration.

Cisco Provides Clients Unparalleled Visibility Across Applications and the Internet

Cisco | March 31, 2021

Cisco introduced today new software-delivered solutions that provide technology teams with a better insight of what is happening all around their networks, at any time. Customers can have ubiquitous insight and the potential to address crucial problems through their digital apps and services by combining ThousandEyes internet and cloud intelligence with AppDynamics and Cisco's most commonly distributed switching family. When more businesses embrace SaaS and cloud-based services to increase business mobility, they become more dependent on networks and services that are outside their reach, such as the public internet. While they do not have full authority over these areas, they are nevertheless accountable for the results of service delivery. ThousandEyes solves this problem by providing actionable information into external networks and services, allowing companies to provide integrated digital experiences to their customers and employees. "Agility, flexibility, and scalability have never been more important, leading many companies to welcome the advantages of cloud-first environments," said Todd Nightingale, SVP and GM of Cisco's Enterprise Networking and Cloud. "With today's announcement, we've reached a significant milestone by placing the power of real internet wisdom in the hands of more Cisco customers, when and where they need it the most. There is no other organization that can have this degree of exposure and perspective." Cisco is combining the capacity of ThousandEyes internet and cloud intelligence with AppDynamics Dash Studio and the Cisco Catalyst 9300 and 9400 Series following its acquisition in August 2020. ThousandEyes Internet and Cloud Intelligence in AppDynamics Dash Studio: integrates ThousandEyes network and internet efficiency analytics into AppDynamics Dash Studio, AppDynamics' next-generation dashboarding experience. Cisco predicts nearly 5 zettabytes of IP traffic per year by 2022

Network World | November 28, 2018

Cisco foresees a massive buildup of IP traffic – 4.8 zettabytes per year by 2022, which is over three times the 2017 rate – lead by the increased use of IoT device traffic, video, and sheer number of new users coming onboard. The company also says there will be 4.8 billion internet users by 2022, up from 3.4 billion in 2017. Those predictions are from Cisco’s Visual Networking Index (VNI), its annual look at the state of the internet culled from actual network traffic reports and independent analyst forecasts. Cisco says that since 1984, over 4.7 zettabytes of IP traffic have flowed across networks, but that’s just a hint of what’s coming. By 2022, more IP traffic will cross global networks than in all prior “internet years” combined up to the end of 2016. In other words, more traffic will be created in 2022 than in the first 32 years since the internet started, Cisco says. (Remember, too, that an exabyte is 1 billion gigabytes and a zettabyte is a thousand exabytes.) One of the more telling facts of the new VNI is the explosion of machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) traffic. For example M2M modules account for 3.1 percent of IP traffic in 2017, but will be 6.4 percent of IP traffic by 2022, said Thomas Barnett, director of service provider thought leadership at Cisco. By 2022, M2M connections will be 51 percent of the total devices and connections on the internet. A slew of applications from smart meters, video, healthcare monitoring, smart car communications, and more will continue to contribute to a significant growth in traffic. What that means is customers and service providers will need to secure and manage M2M traffic in new and better ways, Barnett said.

Cisco Forecasts Exploding SD-WAN Traffic

Virtualization Review | November 28, 2018

Cisco has released its big annual Visual Networking Index (VNI) report, which forecasts a huge rise in IP traffic, much of it driven by the exploding software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) market. SD-WAN growth provides perhaps the most visible sign of the disruptive, game-changing software-defined networking (SDN) movement making inroads into the enterprise. SD-WANs are an increasingly active segment of the SDN movement, which sees more open, interchangeable software solutions overtaking legacy, proprietary, hardware-based systems. Purported benefits include agility and flexibility, lower costs and increased performance. As the SDN movement matures from early testing and proof-of-concept efforts in academia and test labs -- mostly targeting major service providers and carriers -- SD-WAN solutions are providing an entryway into the enterprise networking space. In the comprehensive and wide-ranging Visual Networking Index, Cisco identifies SD-WAN as a major force behind skyrocketing network utilization, which it said will result in more IP traffic over the wires in the next five years than in the entire history of the Internet. "In other words, more traffic will be created in 2022 than in the 32 years since the Internet started," the company said.
