Calico + Flannel = Tigera, a New Container Networking Startup

A startup called Tigera is combining open source projects from CoreOS and Metaswitch, seeking to combine them to discover container networking nirvana. It’s a slightly convoluted story that got announced during the startup’s launch today. Tigera announced its presence with a presentation at CoreOS Fest in San Francisco. Tigera’s founders have been working on Project Calico, a complete Layer 3 stack that Metaswitch has offered to the community as open source. They’ll be combining Calico’s network policy management with flannel, CoreOS’s open source project related to container networking. Flannel creates a fabric that relies on etcd, an information-storage daemon for distributed systems. Etcd is the underpinning for Kubernetes, the open source container orchestration project.

Ericsson researchers top 4.3Gbps downlink on 5G millimeter wave

With a technical specification comprising 8 component carriers (8CC) aggregating 800MHz of millimeter wave spectrum, Ericsson engineers achieved delivery rates of 4.3Gbps – the fastest 5G speed to date. Ericsson Radio System Street Macro 6701 delivered data with downlink speeds of 4.3Gbps over-the-air to an industry partner test device during interoperability testing. The commercial solution, including network and terminal support, will be available to 5G consumers during 2020.

Telecoms operators have reported that 5G in the lab can deliver network speeds that are more than twenty times faster than LTE1. But, this does not reflect the experience of the average user. And 5G roll out in many countries will be limited in terms of coverage and capabilities for several more years, given that the ultra-low latency standards will only be revealed in 3GPP’s Release 16 later this year. This is why it is likely that, for 5G to deliver on its promises, it must be coupled with edge computing.

Hong Kong’s first 5G experience showcase

According to a recent report, the largest telecommunications operator in Hong Kong and a property company have jointly held what they are calling Hong Kong’s first in-mall 5G experience showcase. The Future is Now 5G Experience Showcase, which was held over four days, comprised six experience zones intended to introduce ad demonstrate 5G technology. These zones were based around concepts including autonomous vehicles, smart glasses and a machine that purports to be unbeatable at the game of rock-paper-scissors by using 5G leased lines and a sensory system to detect gestures as they are thrown. Other zones highlighted the speed improvement between 4G and 5G, the potential of 5G technology in smart city development and a start-up exhibition based on IoT technology. The chairman of the telco noted that out of Hong Kong’s many mobile carriers, the telecommunications firm is the first network provider to receive the 5G trial permit, and has succeeded in engineering Hong Kong’s first end-to-end 5G network testing as well as the first Commercial Equipment Field-Testing of 28GHz 5G base stations.

Mobile data speeds are faster on average than Wi-Fi in 33 countries, according to a new study from OpenSignal. The mobile experience in many developed nations is handily beating Wi-Fi speeds, and the divergence between the two technologies should become even greater as 5G services come to the fore. OpenSignal’s study reviewed Wi-Fi and cellular data speeds in 33 countries from Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, and it uncovered vast differences in some countries where Wi-Fi lags considerably behind cellular. Wi-Fi isn’t a complete slouch across the globe, however. Countries that boast high home broadband speeds, such as the U.S., Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, still represent a significant edge for Wi-Fi over cellular data, according to OpenSignal. The findings suggest that the mobile industry needs to rethink its approach to Wi-Fi and change some of its design decisions to reflect the current landscape, according to OpenSignal. While Wi-Fi was indisputably faster than cellular almost all of the time a decade ago when the first iPhone and other smartphones entered the scene, 3G mobile networks were relatively rudimentary compared to today’s performance levels. Wi-Fi also used to have a pricing edge over cellular data and greater capacity, but those benefits have shifted dramatically during the last 10 years.

Verizon aims to improve network functions as ONAP member

Verizon announced it has joined the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) project as a platinum member, underscoring the service providers efforts to propel network virtualization and automation. ONAP is an open source community consisting of global carriers and vendors focused on the lifecycle management of virtual network functions (VNFs). The project is a collaboration between AT&T’s Open ECOMP and the Linux Foundation’s Open-O, which merged together in 2017. With Verizon jumping on board the ONAP bandwagon with an estimated 110 million mobile subscribers, the project enables almost 60% of the world’s mobile subscribers.
