Enhanced security and privacy are cornerstones of 5G Core, but service providers still need to be able to capture quality, actionable data to secure the end-customer experience. Specifically, I’m referring to the data needed to perform troubleshooting, monitoring, customer care and analytics for marketing campaigns. But can this be done in 5G Core using traditional probing methods, without breaching security? The 3GPP standardization for 5G considers enhanced security to be an essential network component. Imagine, for a moment, that we live in a world where it’s common for open heart surgery to be conducted remotely, and I’m sure you’ll agree. The need for a secure, reliable network has resulted in the introduction of a new Service Based Architecture (SBA) that utilizes encrypted interfaces between network functions (NFs). Traffic between network functions is deployed in a cloud native 5G Core Kubernetes node and will not be visible outside the cluster, meaning traditional probing solutions are unsustainable.

But what security risks does 5G represent for the modern age? Some cybersecurity experts suggest that new vulnerabilities are versions of problems not entirely flushed out from 4G and even 3G networks. This article will attempt to explore some problems and opportunities that IoT security experts need to be aware of, and how savvy enterprises can be proactive about security in the age of 5G.

With 5G poised to become widely available across the globe, enterprise organizations need to seriously consider the security implications of deploying the technology. Over the next few years, 5G networks are expected to play a central role in enabling new digital transformation initiatives and in supporting new business use cases that are beyond the reach of current 4G-network technology. Driving much of that change will be 5G’s speeds of up to 1Gbps, its 1-millisecond latencies, and its support for up to about 100 times more connected devices per unit area compared to 4G.

For communications service providers, questions still loom over how 5G will be monetized. Many have voiced the view that the enterprise segment is where 5G will make its money, with potential use cases across a breadth of verticals including the automotive, manufacturing and utilities industries to name a few. However, if service providers focus more on delivering 5G business use cases to small and midsized enterprises (SMEs), this market segment could prove to be a fruitful source of revenue.
As 5G deployments continue to roll-out globally, CSPs are focused on deriving value from projects and partnerships with large multinational enterprises. And they are eager to do so quickly to assure payback from their $1trillion investments in the next generation network. However, are CSPs blinkered in their approach to generating ROI from 5G? Are they limiting themselves by focusing too much on a small segment of the enterprise market, that to date has limited CSPs' involvement in early 5G projects, reducing them to mere providers of connectivity?
