Cisco issues urgent fixes for SD-WAN router flaws

Article | March 23, 2020

Cisco has patched a clutch of high-priority vulnerabilities in its SD-WAN routers and their management software that admins will want to apply as soon as possible. SD-WAN is a technology that allows large companies to manage different types of Wide Area Network (WAN) communications links such as carrier MPLS, conventional broadband, and mobile 4G as a single virtual entity. Making SD-WAN work requires specific routers that support it, spread out across the WAN, as well as management software to interact with this infrastructure. It is this software that is vulnerable. There are five CVEs in total, three of which are rated high, including one, CVE-2020-3266, given a CVSS severity score of 7.8. The latter is a privilege escalation vulnerability in the SD-WAN management software used with a range of Cisco routers, including the vEdge 100 Series, 1000 Series, 2000 Series, 5000 Series, and Cloud Router.

A technical look at 5G mobile device energy efficiency

Article | February 27, 2020

Reducing the level of energy consumption associated with cellular network operations is a strong focus area for Ericsson, and a key sustainability improvement goal. Our post on 5G energy consumption highlights advances in network energy efficiency, but the energy consumed by individual mobile devices also needs to be considered. For example, many components contribute to the energy consumption of a modern smartphone, such as apps, operating systems, and the screen. However, cellular radio also contributes as a critical factor. With 5G, the range of device types is extensive, including built-in modems, smart wearables, and wireless sensors as just a few examples.

Why businesses need to start thinking about 5G.

Article | February 20, 2020

5G services are creeping out to the market but it will take a few years before the full potential of next-generation connectivity is fully understood and realised. But businesses need to start thinking about the technology now, because iterative improvements over 4G connectivity are only part of the story. When core 5G networks are fully rolled out, they will trigger a whole new wave of disruption and opportunity. Here are a few examples of what we know we can expect.

4G, 5G Open RAN technology trials to launch this year

Article | March 18, 2020

Trials of 4G and 5G Open RAN will commence in the UK, Germany, Spain and Brazil this year after Telefónica confirmed a “strategic ecosystem collaboration” with Altiostar, Gigatera Communications, Intel, Supermicro and Xilinx, Inc. Telefónica said the partnership will examine design and developments, integration efforts, operational procedures and testing activities required to deliver Open RAN across its global footprint. This work will specifically include development, optimisation, testing and industrialisation of Open RAN technologies. In a statement, the firm said: “Open RAN represents a paradigm change in network technology where radio baseband hardware is based on standard servers, interfaces between network equipment are open and standardized by the O-RAN Alliance, and the baseband software runs in the Telco Cloud by adopting the Automation and Zero-Touch capabilities that the NFV/SDN paradigm can bring.”
