Application Delivery as an Infrastructure Service

The move to the cloud is in full swing; businesses are using cloud services to drive productivity, as gaming and social media startups are building businesses on cloud infrastructure and consumers are taking advantage of the cloud for anytime, anywhere access to content and services. For organizations that wish to forgo ownership of IT infrastructure and businesses that want a flexible and cost-effective approach to supplementing existing IT infrastructure, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) has become a go-to solution.

Intelligence Brief: How is 5G changing network ownership?

Article | May 18, 2023

5G necessitates a different network strategy. Unlike previous generations, 5G deployment is not only about adding more sites and increasing backhaul capacity. In fact, it is more about rethinking the whole network architecture to make it agile. The high capacity requirements of 5G will necessitate the use of small cells in cities and areas of high footfall (such as airports) to complement national macro networks. Private networks (for example to sell into enterprise customers) and the concept of a neutral host (such as for sports stadiums) are further examples of diversification.

5G Needs Edge Computing to Deliver on Its Promises

Article | February 11, 2020

Edge computing will be a key enabler for 5G to deliver on its bandwidth and latency requirements. In the short term, it can enable developers to provide a “5G experience” at scale. In the long term, it will be necessary to optimise customer experience for real-time, data hungry applications. Telecoms operators have reported that 5G in the lab can deliver network speeds that are more than twenty times faster than LTE1. But, this does not reflect the experience of the average user. And 5G roll out in many countries will be limited in terms of coverage and capabilities for several more years, given that the ultra-low latency standards will only be revealed in 3GPP’s Release 16 later this year. This is why it is likely that, for 5G to deliver on its promises, it must be coupled with edge computing.

Pivotal Commware Launches Next-Gen Pivot 5G Repeater for Enhanced Connectivity

Pivotal Commware | February 20, 2023

Pivotal Commware, the leading provider of 5G mmWave infrastructure products for the wireless edge, recently introduced its next-generation Pivot 5G network repeater with 4x the power for increased range, optical extension, and other significant enhancements. The second-generation Pivot combines a narrower beamwidth on the Donor unit with an increase in gain and a 7dB power boost on the Service Unit. The outcome is a system that can achieve Gigabit service at least 3,000 feet away from the gNB or 50 percent further. These improved capabilities enable mobile network operators (MNOs) to broaden the service area while significantly mitigating the impact of vegetation. The range and utility of the repeater can be significantly expanded with the optical interface kit. This feature enables a Pivot donor unit to provide fiber optic cable for up to four service units. This can eliminate the need for line of sight at each outdoor installation location, allowing for more robust deployments with fewer systems. Additionally, fiber optics facilitates outdoor-to-indoor installations and huge indoor venues, such as stadiums and other areas traditionally served by DAS. Steve Ostroff, Technical Product Manager at Pivotal Commware, shared, "The new Pivot provides ultra-low latency allowing a transparent integration into the network. Its low total power consumption helps streamline permitting operations. But it has more RF power, versatility, and intelligence," He added, "Our newest Pivot also offers enhanced network health monitoring, and a tighter beam profile to the gNB, reducing potential network interference." (Source – Business Wire) Additionally, the new Pivot is easier and quicker to install. The new design features lesser cables and installation at the pole without using tools. The company will exhibit its next-generation Pivot 5G repeater from February 27 to March 2 at the 2023 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Hall 2, Stand 2D15. About Pivotal Commware Pivotal Commware is a company that specializes in the development of software-defined antennas and radios that use proprietary Holographic Beam Forming™ technology to increase network speed, capacity, and spectral efficiency. The company's products are designed to address the most challenging aspects of millimeter wave technology, and it created the world's first product ecosystem dedicated to solving these issues. Its reconfigurable beams are designed to follow mobile users in real-time, offering network operators the lowest cost, size, weight, and power consumption (C-SWaP) envelope available. The company provides network operators with the tools they need to increase network performance and meet the demands of today's data-driven world.

VMware, Cisco, and Aryaka Continue to Dominate SD-WAN Sales

SDxCentral | October 10, 2019

The latest IHS Markit report on the SD-WAN market found that VMware, Cisco, and Aryaka continued to dominate the space, though there was a shakeup outside the top three. Overall, the research firm observed a 23% sequential increase in appliances and control and management software sales. The report tracked revenue in U.S. dollars for appliances and software, but did not take into account WAN connectivity revenues, service and support, product maintenance, managed services, or professional services. It found VMware, Cisco, and Aryaka retained the top three positions from July, while Fortinet displaced Silver Peak to take the No. 4 spot aided by a large security appliance refresh. According to the report, sales were driven by enterprises entering a router replacement phase, with many taking the opportunity to upgrade to SD-WAN compatible hardware. In our discussions with vendors, it has become apparent that most recognize SD-WAN as a mainstream technology,” said Josh Bancroft, senior research analyst at IHS Markit, in a statement. “As a result, larger enterprises have begun to refresh their legacy, router-centric WANs with SD-WAN.”
