Android P has WiFi RTT indoor location. But when will Cisco and Aruba switch on the signals?

Wifi signals are already used for indoor location. Google and Apple crowdsource access point locations, and then use signal strengths to estimate location. It’s not that accurate, but it’s better than nothing. However Wifi RTT makes the whole thing much more precise.

RAN Management and Orchestration Is Central to Operators Gaining Control Over Their Own Networks

Article | July 6, 2021

The promise of Open vRAN is to give back to mobile operators some form of control over their networks. The “open” refers to the opening of RAN interfaces. It is critical because it gives operators the possibility to buy the radio unit and the baseband unit from different vendors, rather than having to buy an integrated system, and therefore helps them diversify their suppliers and reduce their dependence on traditional vendors. The “v” refers to virtual. Virtualization is about disaggregating hardware and software and enabling the use of commercial off-the-shelf servers, instead of the usual purpose-built hardware, to run network functions in order to increase flexibility and reduce costs. Across Asia-Pacific, the announcements and activities from operators including Airtel, Axiata, NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile, Smartfren and Telkomsel indicate a growing appetite for open and virtualized radio access networks. In countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, open RAN can for example help to address the challenges of remote connectivity and to deploy a network in places where it has been traditionally difficult to achieve a satisfactory return on investment.

Reducing mobility interruption time in 5G networks

Article | April 2, 2020

The next steps for 3GPP, release 16 and 17, will introduce additional features to further enhance the support for new use cases related to smart manufacturing, connected vehicles, electrical power distribution and more, such as drones which are controlled by the network. All of these potentially critical use cases require ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) which means high reliability and availability, as well as very low end-to-end latency in the range of a few milliseconds. The 5G system is designed with this in mind, and the continued evolution of 5G New Radio (NR) will continue to optimize mobility performance further. A critical part of this is to reduce the handover interruption time between cells in the 5G network.

SD-WAN security: The impact of orchestrated services multiplicity

Article | February 17, 2020

The pace of software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN) deployments has experienced strong growth over the past four years. As a result, the SD-WAN has already become a strategic component of many communications service provider (CSP) networks. One reason for SD-WAN growth is that the service richness of SD-WANs continues to evolve, such as with the integration of security services into those deployments. Increasingly, SD-WAN security services are becoming an important differentiator, playing a major role in the managed SD-WAN service provider selection process.

Five Broadcasting Technology Transition Factors to Consider

Article | March 4, 2020

You may be asking yourself, what will the broadcasting industry look like a year from now or five years into the future? How do I successfully transition my broadcast technology to keep pace? Here are five important factors to consider when reshaping your broadcasting technology in this time of rapid change. After all, the decisions made now will determine the technical environment we live with for years to come. If you’re considering broadcast technology transition, begin by asking the question, how should this workflow exist in the future? Does it make sense to keep doing what we do with no changes to operational assumptions? How long do we expect the best practices implemented today to remain best practices?
