5G Standalone: What's So Exciting About It?

Article | May 20, 2021

The much-anticipated 5G Standalone has arrived. T-Mobile is the first to launch it in the USA, covering 250 million people across 7,500 cities and towns, including rural areas. China Mobile is the only other service provider to launch it in Hong Kong. Overall, 58 operators are currently investing (November 2020) in 5G SA, including those who have launched. 5G SA makes a break from 5G non-standalone by integrating the evolved packet core or the signaling brain of the 5G network, which controls the network's devices. It prepares the groundwork for new services unique to this generation of networks, such as network slicing to customize enterprise services across multiple networks.

New nubia Red Magic 5G teaser shows off interesting "Slow Door Video" capture mode

Article | May 20, 2021

nubia and its CEO Ni Fei, in particular, have really been going the extra mile to hype-up the upcoming Red Magic 5G phone. Earlier teasersfocused on 5G connectivity, 144Hz display refresh rate, raw performance and active cooling, but now attention shifts a bit as we draw ever closer to the phone's March 12 announcement date. Clearly, Ni Fei wants fans to know that beyond a hardcore gaming experience, the Red Magic 5G will also deliver a capable camera. The latest teaser video shows off a cool feature called Slow Door Video, which we are guessing is a rather crude translation. Also crudely translated, the text of the post itself reads.

One refreshing initiative sees telcos partnering with other telcos to lower barriers to entry to XR content via the Global XR Content Telco Alliance.

Operator personal cloud: Engage subscribers with a content hub

Article | May 20, 2021

While many 5G use cases have centered on enterprise opportunities that leverage the speed, responsiveness and capacity of this advanced wireless technology, telecom operators must be careful to not brush off the desires of individual subscribers. They, too, are looking to make the most of their 5G data plans and investments in 5G-enabled mobile devices. Unfortunately for many subscribers, the technology has not yet lived up to its promise. A recent consumer study from Ericsson shows that 70% of smartphone users are disappointed in the availability of new 5G-powered services and apps. The same study also found that subscribers are willing to pay 20-30% more for a premium 5G plan bundled with digital service use cases. Taken together, these two data points indicate that the time has come for operators to develop a 5G strategy focused on increasing value-added services for the subscriber. Operators who want to remain competitive as well as recoup their infrastructure investments must think beyond simply providing enhanced connectivity. Today's consumers are savvy, use multiple connected devices and are short on time. And they expect a lot more from their digital service providers.
